New Year, New Goals: How to Set Realistic Fitness Goals for 2025

Written By: Kaylie Gragnano

The start of a new year is the perfect time to reflect on your fitness journey and set fresh goals. However, many resolutions fail because they’re too ambitious or vague. To set yourself up for success in 2025, here are a handful of actionable steps to create in order to achieve realistic fitness goals:

Reflect on Your Current Fitness Level

Take stock of where you are right now. Consider your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Ask yourself: What worked well for me last year? What challenges did I face?

Set SMART Goals

Your goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Example: instead of saying, “I want to get stronger,” aim for, “I want to deadlift 150 pounds by June 2025.”

Break Goals into Smaller Milestones

Large goals can feel overwhelming, so break them into smaller, manageable steps. For example, if your goal is to run a 10K, start by training for a 5K first.

Focus on Consistency Over Perfection

It’s better to work out three times a week consistently than to aim for seven days and burn out. Create a realistic schedule that fits your lifestyle.

Mix It Up

Avoid boredom and plateaus by incorporating a variety of workouts into your routine. Try strength training, cardio, yoga, or group fitness classes to keep things exciting. Here at MVP, we offer it all! Check out our winter schedule to find a class that's right for you!

Prioritize Recovery and Rest

Recovery is just as important as exercise. Schedule rest days and prioritize sleep to avoid burnout and injuries.

Track Your Progress

Use a fitness journal, app, or wearable tracker to monitor your workouts and achievements. Celebrate small wins to stay motivated.

Find Accountability

Share your goals with a friend, join a fitness group, or hire a trainer to keep yourself accountable.

Fuel Your Goals with Proper Nutrition

Pair your fitness efforts with a balanced diet. Focus on whole foods, proper hydration, and fueling your body for exercise.

Be Flexible and Adjust as Needed

Life happens, and it’s okay to tweak your goals if circumstances change. The key is to keep moving forward.

By setting realistic fitness goals and taking consistent steps to achieve them, you’ll create a sustainable routine that brings results. Remember, fitness is a journey, not a destination.
